Chinese automaker Dongfeng is making waves in the electric vehicle (EV) market with the launch of its new model, the Xinghai S7, under its Forthing brand. Touted as the world’s most aerodynamic production EV, the Xinghai S7 is set to compete with established players and potentially make its way to European markets.
According to Forthing, the 2024 Dongfeng Forthing Xinghai S7 arrives with an exceptional drag coefficient of 0.191, narrowly edging out the Xpeng Mona M03’s 0.194. This achievement is attributed to various design features, including its hidden door handles, low-drag wheel covers, an enclosed grille, and a coupe-like roofline descending from the B-pillar.
Moreover, Dongfeng claims this drag coefficient is lower than that of a bullet, positioning the S7 as the most aerodynamic mass-produced vehicle to date.
The 2024 Dongfeng Forthing Xinghai S7 is powered by a rear-mounted electric motor with a capacity of 160 kW, generating an impressive torque of 310 Nm. This EV accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.67 seconds. It features a 56.8 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, which provides a CLTC range of 555 km.
Furthermore, the EV’s dimensions are 4,935 mm in length, 1,915 mm in width, and 1,495 mm in height, with a wheelbase measuring 2,915 mm. Additionally, the trunk offers a capacity of 541 liters, which can be expanded to 1,303 liters when the seats are folded down.
In the Chinese market, the 2024 Dongfeng Forthing Xinghai S7 is available in three different variants: the Light Edition, priced at 119,800 yuan (around $17,087), the Pleasure Edition at 129,800 yuan (around 18,513), and the Luxury Edition, which retails for 139,800 yuan (about $19,939). These pricing strategies appear to be carefully crafted to compete with the Xpeng Mona M03.
The 2024 Dongfeng Forthing Xinghai S7 is equipped with a range of advanced features, including a 15.6-inch infotainment screen and an 8.8-inch instrument display. It operates on the Xinghai OS system, which supports gesture controls and continuous voice commands. The vehicle also offers 4G connectivity and serves as a Wi-Fi hotspot.
For safety and convenience, it includes a basic driving assistance system featuring adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assistance. Higher trim levels offer an optional 12-speaker sound system for enhanced audio quality.
Dongfeng has expressed its intent to enter the European market, as evidenced by mentions of an EU certificate for the Xinghai S7 on the company’s website. The Forthing brand was showcased at the IAA in Munich last year, indicating its goal to international expansion.
Additionally, plans have been announced to launch the Voyah and Mhero brands in Germany, further signaling Dongfeng’s ambition to establish a presence in Europe.
Interestingly, Dongfeng may introduce an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) variant of the Xinghai S7 in the future, potentially broadening its appeal to buyers concerned about range anxiety.
As Dongfeng positions the 2024 Dongfeng Forthing Xinghai S7 to challenge both domestic and international competitors, its combination of aerodynamic efficiency, competitive pricing, and advanced features could make it stand out in the global EV market.
