With A 27% Sales Boost In 2024, The Mustang Mach-E Reflects Growing Consumer Demand For EVs
In a major shift that illustrates the evolving landscape of American automotive preferences, Ford’s Mustang Mach-E electric vehicle (EV) outsold its gasoline-powered namesake for the first time in 2024, marking a historic milestone for the iconic brand.
The Mach-E, which initially sparked controversy among Mustang purists when it debuted in 2019, delivered 51,745 units to American customers in 2024, representing a robust 27% increase from the previous year’s 40,771 sales. In contrast, the traditional gasoline-powered Mustang experienced its lowest sales year on record, with just 44,003 units sold – a 9.5% decline from 2023 according to Automotive News.
This reversal of fortunes reflects broader changes in consumer preferences and the growing acceptance of EVs in the American market. The Mach-E’s success is particularly noteworthy given its unconventional status as a crossover bearing the Mustang name, a decision that initially drew criticism from automotive enthusiasts.
Ford spokesperson Said Deep acknowledged that while the traditional Mustang’s sales were affected by production constraints, the company maintains a positive outlook on the nameplate’s future. “Measuring Mustang’s success by just looking at volume misses the mark on the strength of this particular segment,” Deep explained, emphasizing the vehicle’s continued profitability and importance to enthusiast customers.
The Mach-E’s strong performance contributed to Ford’s record-breaking year in EV sales, with the company delivering 97,865 EVs in the United States (U.S.) during 2024, marking a 35% increase. The electric crossover’s appeal has been enhanced by continuous improvements since its 2021 launch, including over-the-air software updates and access to Tesla’s Supercharger network through an adapter.
Ford has actively supported Mach-E sales through various initiatives, including offering free home charger installation – a program recently extended through March 2025. While the vehicle lost its $7,500 EV tax credit for purchases due to battery sourcing restrictions, customers can still access this incentive through leasing options. The company’s planned shift of battery production to Michigan is expected to help restore tax credit eligibility for purchases.
Joe Bellino, the Mustang’s brand manager, sees the Mach-E as a complementary addition to the Mustang lineup rather than a replacement. “Mustang more than ever is taking on different shape and forms for us,” he noted, suggesting that the electric crossover provides an alternative for customers who might not want a traditional sports coupe.
The sales milestone arrives at a pivotal moment in automotive history, as traditional sports car segments contract while EV adoption accelerates. Despite lower overall sales, the gasoline-powered Mustang has actually increased its segment share by about 10 percentage points, benefiting from the departure of competitors like Chevrolet and Dodge from the market.
