Tesla has expanded its Model 3 lineup in Europe with the introduction of a new Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) electric vehicle (EV) variant, delivering an impressive WLTP-estimated range of 702 km (436 miles). This new addition to the Tesla family is being hailed as the most efficient EVcurrently available in Europe.

Pricing and Positioning

The Model 3 Long Range RWD is positioned between the entry-level RWD and the Long Range All-Wheel Drive (AWD) versions in terms of pricing and specifications. In the United Kingdom (UK), it is priced at £44,990 (around $58,960), while in Germany, it starts at €44,990 (around $49,402).

Moreover, Tesla is offering an attractive lease deal in the UK, with the Model 3 available for as low as £299 a month for orders placed and delivered before December 31, 2024. This offer suggests that Tesla is already focusing on boosting its Q4 2024 sales, at least in the UK market.

Performance and Efficiency

The new Tesla Model 3 Long Range RWD contains several impressive features. It offers an estimated range of 702 km (436 miles) based on the WLTP standard, providing extended driving capability for long-distance trips. The EV can reach a top speed of 201 kph (125 mph), showcasing its high-performance potential.

In terms of acceleration, the Model 3 can go from 0 to 100 km/h (0 to 62 mph) in just 5.2 seconds, ensuring quick and responsive performance. The energy consumption is rated at 12.5 kWh per 100 km, although Tesla’s configurator also lists it as 14.4 kWh per 100 km, indicating some variation depending on driving conditions.

Significant Range Improvement

This new variant offers a significant range increase compared to its siblings. It provides an additional 189 km (117 miles) over the standard RWD version and 73 km (45 miles) more than the Long Range AWD model. Tesla attributes this improvement to “continued engineering efforts focused on energy efficiency” while simultaneously reducing costs.

The efficiency of the new Model 3 is particularly noteworthy. With a consumption rate of just 12.5 kWh/100 km, it ranks as the most efficient EV on the German market, surpassing competitors like the Fiat 500 Elektro (13.0 kWh/100 km).

Tesla has not disclosed specific details about the battery size or the exact changes made to achieve this extended range. However, the company mentioned that the new version is 14 kg (about 31 pounds) lighter than the regular rear-wheel drive version while maintaining the same 208 kW power output.

Evolution of the Model 3

The launch of this new variant comes as the Model 3, now in its seventh year since its 2017 debut, continues to evolve. The Long Range RWD Model 3 retains all the features of its predecessors while pushing the boundaries of EV efficiency and range.

Deliveries of the new Tesla Model 3 Long Range RWD are expected to begin in November in European markets. With its combination of extended range, high efficiency, and competitive pricing, this new variant is set to strengthen Tesla’s position in the European EV market and appeal to buyers seeking long-range EVs without the premium price tag of higher-end models.
