Honda’s 0 Saloon & 0 SUV Marks The First Self-Developed U.S. EVs With Reimagined ASIMO Tech Powering The Next-Gen Driving Experience
Honda made a striking entrance at the 2025 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) today, revealing two groundbreaking electric vehicles (EVs) from its upcoming 0 Series line and introducing an unexpected digital revival of its beloved ASIMO robot.
In detail, Honda showcased two models: the sophisticated 0 Saloon and the practical 0 SUV, both representing Honda’s first fully self-developed EVs for the United States (U.S.) market. The 0 Saloon, drawing inspiration from Honda’s iconic 1984 Pininfarina-designed HPX concept, stunned onlookers with its distinctive wedge-shaped profile and futuristic design elements that some journalists compared to Lamborghini’s aesthetic.
While the latest iteration has evolved from its initial concept, replacing dramatic gullwing doors with conventional ones, it maintains its striking silhouette and innovative features like a 3D rear brake light band.
The 0 SUV, meanwhile, presents a more conventional yet forward-looking design, featuring a traditional long-hood proportion reminiscent of Honda’s current CR-V. However, its bold styling includes a distinctive upright rear tailgate and substantial D-pillars that may impact rear visibility. Both EVs will be manufactured in the U.S., representing a substantial portion of Honda’s $5 billion investment in American EV production.
The vehicles will feature an innovative centralized electrical/electronic architecture, powered by a custom system-on-chip developed in partnership with Renesas Electronics Corporation. This advanced system consolidates multiple vehicle control modules into a single main ECU, representing a significant technological advancement in vehicle electronics integration.
Moreover, the announcement marks a momentous milestone in Honda’s transition to EVs, with production scheduled to begin in 2026 at the company’s new EV manufacturing hub in Ohio.
In a surprising twist, Honda announced that ASIMO, previously known as the company’s groundbreaking humanoid robot, has been reimagined as an advanced vehicle operating system. This new ASIMO OS will manage everything from over-the-air software updates to Level 3 autonomous driving capabilities, building upon technology first introduced in the Japanese-market Honda Legend in 2021.
Regarding charging infrastructure, Honda has committed to playing an active role in IONNA, a seven-manufacturer collaboration aimed at developing a comprehensive charging network. Jay Joseph, VP of Sustainability and Business Development at Honda North America, expressed confidence that their charging network could rival Tesla’s Supercharger Network by decade’s end. The EVs will come equipped with J3400/NACS connectors, ensuring compatibility with Tesla’s charging standard.
Moving forward, Honda envisions these vehicles playing a crucial role in grid stabilization through vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology, potentially helping to smooth out energy demand fluctuations by the middle of the next decade. This forward-thinking approach suggests Honda’s 0 Series vehicles will offer more than just transportation, positioning them as integral components of a sustainable energy ecosystem.
