Volkswagen ID. Buzz Arrives In Five Trim Levels With Limited Customization Options
Volkswagen’s highly anticipated ID. Buzz electric minivan has finally arrived in the United States (U.S.) electric vehicle (EV) market, with the online configurator now live on the company’s website.
According to Volkswagen, the ID. Buzz is available in five distinct trim levels, offering a variety of features and options to suit different preferences and budgets. The starting price for the base model, the ID. Buzz Pro S, is set at $61,545 including destination fees.
Moving up the lineup, the ID. Buzz Pro S Plus is priced at $66,040, providing additional enhancements and features. Forthose interested in all-wheel drive, the ID. Buzz Pro S Plus with 4Motion AWD is available for $70,540.
Additionally, there is a 1st Edition model, which begins at $67,045 and offers a special set of features. Finally, the ID. Buzz 1st Edition with 4Motion AWD includes all-wheel drive and is priced at $71,545. These trim levels give customers a range of choices to meet their specific needs and desires, ensuring there’s an ID. Buzz model for everyone.
Surprisingly, the configurator offers very few options for customization. Only the Pro S Plus trim allows for anysignificant choices, such as a two-tone exterior ($995) and an Electrochromic Smart Glass Roof ($1,495). These features come standard on the 1st Edition models.
While trim options are limited, Volkswagen offers a range of accessories like floor mats, mud flaps, and cargo carriers. Selecting all available accessories can push the price of a top-trim ID. Buzz to over $75,000.
Perhaps the most eyebrow-raising detail is that all ID. Buzz models, regardless of price, come equipped with rear drum brakes. This choice is unusual for a vehicle in this price range, especially considering its substantial curb weight of around 6,000 pounds. Volkswagen defends this decision, noting that EVs primarily use regenerative braking and rarely rely on friction brakes.
All ID. Buzz versions feature a 91-kilowatt-hour battery pack. The rear-wheel-drive models offer an EPA-rated range of 234 miles, while the all-wheel-drive versions manage 231 miles. Single-motor configurations produce 282 horsepower.
The first ID. Buzz deliveries, starting with the 1st Edition models, are expected to reach U.S. dealerships before the end of 2023. As the EV is manufactured in Germany, it is not eligible for the $7,500 federal tax credit on purchase, though it may qualify when leased.
With its high starting price, limited customization options, and some unexpected features like the rear drum brakes, it remains to be seen how the U.S. market will receive the Volkswagen ID. Buzz. While the vehicle’s retro-inspired design and electric powertrain may appeal to some, its price point puts it in competition with more established electric SUVs and luxury vehicles.
As deliveries begin, industry observers will be watching closely to see if Volkswagen’s long-awaited electric minivan can capture the hearts of American buyers in the same way its predecessor did decades ago.
