Volkswagen has confirmed that its electric vehicles (EVs) will gain access to Tesla’s extensive Supercharger network beginning in June 2025, which represents another milestone in the automotive industry’s gradual convergence around Tesla’s charging standard.

According to PC Magazine, this announcement was made at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas by Director of Public Relations at Volkswagen Group of America Mark Gillies stating, “We get access to the network in June/July, when we have an official VW adapter.”

The integration will begin with the rollout of official Volkswagen adapters, which will allow current Volkswagen EV models – including the ID.4 crossover SUV and the recently launched ID. Buzz minivan – to connect to Tesla’s charging stations.

Late NACS Commitment by Volkswagen

Particularly, Volkswagen was among the last major automakers to commit to the North American Charging Standard (NACS) in December 2023, a delay partly attributed to its substantial investment in the competing Electrify America charging network. Volkswagen’s decision to wait for the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) to certify the NACS standard before making its commitment also contributed to this timing.

Moreover, the integration into Tesla’s charging network places Volkswagen alongside a growing list of major automakers who have already gained access, including Ford, General Motors (GM), Rivian, Volvo, Polestar, and Nissan. Mercedes-Benz is expected to be the next automaker to join the network, though the timing remains unconfirmed.

Adapters Until 2026 for Volkswagen EVs

For current Volkswagen EV owners, this transition period will require the use of adapters until around 2026, when new Volkswagen models are expected to feature built-in NACS ports. While third-party adapters from manufacturers like A2Z are already available in the market, Volkswagen is actively working with suppliers to develop and approve official adapters. Pricing details for these official adapters have not yet been disclosed.

The integration process may face some challenges, as evidenced by previous manufacturers’ experiences. Ford, for instance, encountered delays in its adapter rollout and needed to replace some units, highlighting the complexity of implementing such transitions smoothly.

Tesla Charging Network Expansion

The expansion of Tesla’s charging network to include other manufacturers traces back to 2022 when Tesla announced plans to open its infrastructure to other brands, motivated in part by federal EV charging grants under the Biden administration. What initially appeared to be an ambitious move gained considerable momentum in 2023 when Ford became the first major automaker to adopt Tesla’s connector.

Questions remain about how this integration will extend to Volkswagen Group’s other brands, including Audi and Porsche. While these brands were part of the joint announcement committing to NACS in December 2023, specific timelines for their access to the Supercharger network have not been confirmed.

Through the results of this development, it convey more than just a technical integration; it signals a broader consolidation within the EV charging infrastructure, potentially simplifying the charging experience for consumers and accelerating the adoption of EVs in North America.
